People and culture

An energised, collaborative and agile team that contributes to business success.

Although we operate in a dynamic, complex and competitive environment, our business has always been guided by the highest standards of excellence. Our reputation for high quality and innovative tobacco products is the result of our commitment to recruiting, developing and retaining outstanding talent and building a great place to work.

Building a legacy of leaders

Having a talented workforce has become one of the most critical factors in our industry. We want BAT Kenya to have excellent people, engaged teams and be a great place to work. After all, it is our people who deliver our business strategy.

As competition for good people intensifies, we need to build a strong and clearly differentiated reputation as an employer. For many people, the attraction of a rewarding career with a major international business that values their contribution and supports their professional learning and development, are key factors in their decision to work for us.

Nurturing local talent

We are keen to develop local talent in the communities in which we operate. We have an array of Leadership Development programmes which run across all levels. We are a net exporter of talent to the BAT Group, currently with 11 Kenyans on assignment in various BAT operations spread across Africa, Europe and Asia.

These international assignments enable our talent to experience new cultures, different leadership styles and ways of working as well as building critical experiences as they continue evolving into senior leadership level.

Organisational excellence

Top Employer Kenya and AfricaWe are proud of the external recognition we have received as the leading employer in Kenya and Africa. In 2017 we were awarded the inaugural award for Overall Best Employer in Kenya by the Federation of Kenya Employers, a leadership position which we have sustained two years in a row having received the award again in 2018.

Aside from national recognition, BAT Kenya has also been twice certified Top Employer in Kenya and Africa by the globally recognised Top Employers Institute, underlining our position as one of the best companies to work for in the country and the continent.

A great place to work

A great place to workOur people strategy is underpinned by our guiding principles.

Enterprising spirit

We value enterprise from our employees, giving us a great breadth of ideas and viewpoints to enhance the way we do business. We have the confidence to passionately pursue growth and new opportunities while accepting the considered entrepreneurial risk that comes with it. We are bold and strive to overcome challenges. This is the cornerstone of our success.

Freedom through responsibility

We give our people the freedom to operate in our local environment, providing them with the benefits of BAT Group’s scale but with the ability to succeed locally. We always strive to do the right thing, exercising our responsibility to society and other stakeholders. We use our freedom to take decisions and act in the best interest of consumers.

Open minded

Our corporate culture is a great strength of the business and one of the reasons we have been and will continue to be successful. We are forward-looking and anticipate consumer needs, winning with innovative, high-quality products. We listen to and genuinely consider other perspectives and changing social expectations. We are open to new ways of doing things.

Strength from diversity

Our staff population comprises people from more than ten countries, giving us unique insights into local markets and enhancing our ability to compete across the world. We respect and celebrate each other’s differences and enjoy working together. We harness diversity – of our people, cultures, viewpoints, brands, markets and ideas – to strengthen our business. We value what makes each of us unique.
